Windows 11 update is the cause of SSD failures, Microsoft…

    0

Microsoft has formally declared that the solid-state drive failures it has seen many users report with the Windows 11 update of August 2025 (KB5063878) are non-existent. After taking an extensive investigation, the tech giant claimed it did not see any relation between the types of hard drive failures reported on social media and the August 2025 Windows security update.

    Investigation Results

In the analysis conducted by Microsoft, no rise in disk failure rates or file corruption was observed to occur after the update was deployed. The company collaborated with storage companies to test different SSD configurations but was unable to replicate the reported problems. No unusual patterns associated with storage failures were also found in telemetry data of millions of Windows devices.

    User Experience vs. Formative Results.

Even after the end of Microsoft, users still report SSD issues with the update installed. The problem in question was initially brought to attention on a social media platform by a Japanese tech enthusiast who noticed that SSDs were not working during the process of transferring large files. Affected users report a pattern in which systems crash when writing over 50GB of data to drives already at least 60 percent full.

    Affected Hardware Models

There are several brands of SSD that are reported to be used by users, such as:

    • Corsair Force MP600
    • Maxio SSD series
    • SanDisk Extreme Pro
    • Kioxia Exceria Plus G4 and M.2 versions
    • Phison and InnoGrit controller drives.

Drives were lost on some attempts to restart, and permanently lost on others. NAND controller giant Phison asserted that it was cooperating with Microsoft to fix the bug as it reported that their testing had not reproduced the issue.

Microsoft recommends that Windows 11 users should not write large files (50GB+) to drives that are more than 60 percent full. Users who have problems can back up the latest update, in case they are worried. Both drive manufacturers and Microsoft are inviting people to report any incidents they face to assist in identifying any possible pattern.

    Industry Context

This is a similar case to past technology scandals in which early corporate denials were followed by the eventual discovery of hardware or software defects. Although Microsoft insists that the update is working as intended, it has been advised by experts that users should keep a close watch on their storage devices and also ensure that they do frequent backups until the issue is completely addressed.
